Face lift surgery
PURPOSE :
The procedure involves tightening the soft tissues of the face to eliminate wrinkles and excess skin, to remove changes due to aging. This procedure is often associated with removal of fat tissue from the area under the chin and its transplantation to areas requiring correction (i.e. cheeks).
INDYCATIONS :
Flabby facial skin, facial and neck wrinkles, appearance of 'aged' and tired skin.
PROCEDURES:
anesthesia : local and droperodol-fentanyl (NLA), or general
procedure:excision of excess skin and plastic reconstruction of the affected tissues (ligaments, tendons, muscles). Incisions are made in the pre-auricular and post-auricular areas, as well as at the margin of hair growth to make scars the least visible.
The skin is separated from its underlying structures on the face and neck. Muscles and tendons are reconstructed to fix skin in its new location. Excess skin is removed and the wound is stitched in layers. Drains are placed for one day
POST OPERATIVE CARE :
Drains are removed 1 day after the procedure. Some stitches are removed within a few days, the rest after 10 days. Compressive bandages are required continuously for 4-6 days; they are used to decrease the risk of complications (hemorrhage, hematoma) as well as to help sculpt the new contours of the face, chin, and neck.
POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS :
Increased length of healing, infections, hemorrhage, moderate pain requiring oral painkillers. Edema and bruising can last about one week.

TIME NEED FOR RECUPERATION:
The effects of the surgery are seen after approximately 3 months. Full physical recovery is after about 10-14 days. The head can be washed 3 days after the procedure. The procedure does not require general shaving of the head, but narrow patches of hair are shaved to keep the edges of the wound clean.
PRE-OPEERATIVE PREPARATION:
The patient must discontinue smoking cigarettes, cigars, and the use any type of tobacco products for the 3 weeks before the procedure and until the wounds have finished healing. Any medications that can affect blood clotting must be discontinued three weeks before the procedure.
REQUIRED TEST :
bleeding time, clotting time, blood morphology, EKG.
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
coagulopathies, uncontrolled hypertension, uncontrolled diabetes, vascular hemorrhagic diathesis, infections in the operated area
